Grothman Constituent Email Obfuscates on Abortion Funding
and Wisconsin Infrastructure

On Saturday, April 24, 2021, Rep. Grothman sent out a constituent “newsletter” email. Although the email discussed many topics, there are two that stand out.

First, Grothman claimed to have been "protecting life” in cosponsoring the Protecting Life & Taxpayers Act, which would have “made it illegal” for organizations involved in abortion to receive tax dollars. However, he failed to note two things - the facts that such is *already* illegal, and that the Bill never actually made it out of committee.

Second, Grothman noted that his opposition to the Biden Admin's infrastructure plan was due to the President having revoked permits for the Keystone XL Pipeline, and because the plan includes "non-traditional" infrastructure. He claimed that Wisconsin lost "hundreds" of jobs from the Keystone permit revocation. In fact, that number is unconfirmed. It is unclear whether Wisconsin ever stood to gain even a single job from the Keystone XL project.

Moreover, it is fact that Grothman has been in office for over 6 years now, and has failed to sponsor, or co-sponsor, a single bill for any type of infrastructure project. That’s despite the fact that Wisconsin faces significant infrastructure challenges, including:

  • Driving on roads in need of repair costs each Wisconsin driver $637 per year.

  • 157 Wisconsin dams have high-hazard potential.

  • To meet the state’s currently unmet drinking water needs would cost approximately $1B.

  • Meeting currently unmet wastewater disposal needs would cost upward of $6B.

  • Our schools have a current estimated gap between available funds and needed expenditures of $836M.

  • 8.7% of Wisconsin’s 14,275 bridges are rated structurally deficient, up from 7.3% in 2014. In fact, since Glenn Grothman first went to DC, the number of structurally deficient bridges in Wisconsin has risen dramatically, from 1,043 in 2014, to 1,241 in 2019.

Grothman considers schools to be “non-traditional” infrastructure, but the American Society of Engineers regularly includes the above education statistic in its annual infrastructure report cards for each state and the nation as a whole.

The rest of the newsletter is more of the same, and not worth going into in detail. Grothman is an embarrassment to the state of Wisconsin. Infrastructure issues emphatically are issues of importance to Wisconsin voters, and they should be issues of importance to Wisconsin’s representatives.
